While Sonae Arauco is widely known for its exquisite Innovus Decorative Products collection, one of our key focuses is providing our clients and businesses with sustainable and quality solid wood-alternative products.
There are various wood-based substrates on offer within Sonae Arauco’s product portfolio. Ensuring plenty to choose from in dry environments and when there is a risk of dampness, thus making it possible to ensure the best product for the application’s demands. We’ll be taking a closer look at Particleboard and the various elements that make up its effective structure.
1 – Strength
While particleboard is a sturdy substrate, it is not as strong as MDF and is thus more suited to decorative, aesthetic purposes. Designs that encompass cabinetry, backboards and décor finishes work well with particleboard.
2 – Density and weight
One of particleboard’s key features is its lightweight build structure. Made from wood chips, it is versatile, sustainable, and easy to cut to specific dimensions. While light in weight, Particleboard is also denser than plywood, making it a more robust alternative.
3 – Moisture resistance
Unlike our MDF selection, Particleboard is not suitable for high moisture retention. Due to its composition, particleboard may start to swell when exposed to dampness. Always ensure that your particleboard furnishings and finishes are indoors or within dry spaces. Our Novogold MR substrate will offer further water resistance built into its structure.
4 – Warp resistance
While particleboard substrates have a relatively low resistance to warping, additional touches such as paint, primers, or our decorative finishes help to increase their strength to a greater extent.
5 – Durability
Particleboard is not as durable as MDF. However, with proper care, they can last for at least 3-5 years. Additional surface covers, such as a veneer or decorative finish, will increase their durability. Resin coating will extend its lifecycle to at least 10-15 years of use.
6 – Insulation
Due to its ability to trap sound and heat, Particleboard has incredible insulation properties and is often used in partitioning ceiling walls, recording studios, and even concert halls.
7 – Eco-friendly
The preservation of our natural forestry is key. As such, particleboard is only manufactured using wood materials such as chippings and cuttings to ensure that no part of the timber goes to waste. The use of particleboard indeed helps environmental conservation efforts to a large extent.
8 – Fire Resistance
Sonae Arauco coats our decorative substrates in a melamine resin, which acts as a superb fire retardant. This is why melamine-faced boards are often used in industrial furniture manufacturing. This is one of the most important safety decisions for home applications.
Our particleboard options
Sonae Arauco offers particleboard in two different substrates.
